Classroom to Career: Breaking into Competitive Industry

LEAF Network recently hosted the insightful event, "Classroom to Career: Breaking into Competitive Industry," designed to equip aspiring professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the transition from education to the workplace.
The session brought together experienced individuals and eager learners, fostering a dynamic exchange of practical advice.
Breaking into Apprenticeships & Competitive Careers
Adel Hussein, a JLR Degree Apprentice, highlighted the critical importance of tailoring applications. Key recommendations included:
- Customizing CVs and cover letters for each specific company.
- Conducting thorough research into company values, recent news, and ongoing projects to reference during interviews.
- Building genuine rapport with interviewers, as establishing a human connection can be a significant differentiator.
Adel emphasized the principle: "Work smarter, not harder." Effective communication of one's achievements and value proposition is paramount; candidates must articulate what they bring to the table.
Mastering Interviews – The CTI Approach
Ali Hassan, an incoming degree apprentice, introduced the CTI method – a culmination of Body Language, Speech, and Answer Structures for interview success:
- Body Language: Project confidence through good posture, smiles, appropriate gestures, and strong eye contact.
- Speech: Avoid monotony by varying tone, cadence, tempo, and pitch to keep answers engaging and impactful.
- Answer Structures: Employ techniques like the STAR method and storytelling, delivered with confidence, to create vivid imagery and clearly convey experiences. Conclude by expressing genuine motivation and passion for the role.
University & Career Preparation
Alicja Baczmanska and Hajar Mounmak shared valuable insights for academic and early-career preparation:
- Gain an academic edge by attending live university lectures, reading books authored by professors in the field, reviewing relevant course modules, and exploring supplementary online courses.
- For Spring Weeks and Scholarships: Apply early, diligently practice online assessments, and proactively reach out to professionals on platforms like LinkedIn for advice and guidance.
- Engage actively in extracurriculars such as societies, sports, and leadership positions early on to build valuable experience and expand professional networks.
Connections & Networking: The Key to Success
A recurring theme was the power of networking:
- First impressions are crucial; learn to introduce yourself clearly and effectively.
- Focus on building and maintaining connections. Networking is an ongoing process involving follow-ups, check-ins, and offering value to your contacts.
- Recognize that networking opens doors to numerous opportunities, including apprenticeships, internships, and full-time positions, often arising through established connections.
The "Classroom to Career" event provided attendees with actionable strategies and reinforced LEAF Network's commitment to supporting young professionals on their journey to success.
